Brigadier-General Mohammed Yerima is a distinguished Nigerian Army officer whose career has bridged the critical nexus of military operations and strategic communications. A graduate of Ahmadu Bello University in Political Science, he entered the Nigerian Army in October 1989 and was commissioned into the Corps of Army Public Relations.
Over more than three decades of service, General Yerima has held key appointments ranging from ADC to the Commander of TRADOC, Spokesperson of the Army’s 81 Division, Public Relations Officer at the Nigerian Defence Academy, and Military Spokesperson for the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (2000-2002). He rose to become Director of Defence Information (2009-2013) and subsequently Deputy Director in key production and reserve directorates at TRADOC and Defence Headquarters.
In February 2021, he was appointed Director of Army Public Relations – the chief communication channel for the Nigerian Army. His professional profile is fortified by membership in the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), the African Public Relations Association (APRA) and fellowship in the West Africa Society for Administration & Communication. He has completed advanced media and leadership courses overseas, including in the UK and Ghana, and a US-Embassy-supported media tour of AFRICOM.
General Yerima’s significance lies in his ability to steer the narrative of defence operations in Nigeria—ensuring that the Army’s image, strategic messaging, media engagement and public trust remain robust amid complex security challenges. His career exemplifies how the military’s information and communications arm is a force multiplier, critical for morale, transparency and civil-military relations.
