Reps To Begin Constitution Amendment Votes December 10, 11

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu announced this to members at the plenary on Tuesday. Kalu, who is also the chairmanof the House Committee on Constitution Review, equally informed members that debate on the constitutional amendment bills will be held on Wednesday and Thursday this week ahead of voting scheduled for next week.

Kalu had earlier informed the House that the committee had already completed the technical work required for this stage of the review, and the committee is now preparing the final set of harmonised documents to be laid before members for consideration.

 

A total of 87 bills seekingto alter the 1999 Constitution are under consideration. They cover electoral reforms, judicial reforms, state police, and fiscal changes. More specifically, the proposals seek to create additional seats for women, new states and local governments, establish state police, and grant full autonomy to local government councils, among several others.
