The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command says its operatives have arrested three suspects linked to the killing of Nwamaka Chigbo, an Abuja-based lawyer.
Chigbo, a former treasurer of the FCT branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), was reportedly found dead by the roadside in Abuja after being attacked around 5:50pm on January 5 by a ‘one chance’ gang, shortly after boarding a black Volkswagen Golf 3 along the Kubwa expressway.
Her death occurred on the same day that Chinemerem Chuwumeziem, a nurse at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, was also found dead, reportedly killed by ‘one chance’ criminals.
After the incidents, the NBA asked Nyesom Wike, the FCT minister, to treat the resurgence of “one chance” crimes in Abuja as a security emergency.
In a statement on Sunday, Josephine Adeh, FCT police spokesperson, said the suspects were members of a ‘one-chance’ armed robbery syndicate.
Adeh said the arrests followed a directive by Miller Dantawaye, FCT commissioner of police, to ensure those responsible for the murder are brought to justice.
“The federal capital territory (FCT) police command has recorded a major breakthrough in its sustained fight against violent crime with the arrest of three notorious armed robbery suspects involved in ‘one-chance’ criminal operations and the gruesome murder of a legal practitioner, Barrister Chigbo Princess Nwamaka Mediatrix,” the statement reads.
Adeh noted that the suspects were arrested between Friday and Saturday at the Dei-Dei, Dakwa and Dan-Tata communities in the Kubwa area of Abuja, after operatives tracked the victim’s mobile phone using digital intelligence.
She noted that preliminary investigations showed the suspects had operated within the FCT for several years, especially during festive periods.
Adeh said the suspects confessed to rolling up the tinted windows of their vehicle, threatening the victim with weapons, and attempting to extort ransom from her.
“She was allegedly assaulted and pushed out of the moving vehicle after she refused to cooperate, leading to her death,” Adeh said.
The police spokesperson said the suspects also admitted to stealing the victim’s Android phone, which they later sold in Dei-Dei for N120,000.
She identified the suspects as Saifullahi Yusuf, 22; Ishau Yusuf, 24; and Minka’ilu Jibril, also known as Dan-Hajia, noting that they are all from Kaduna state.
She added that Saifullahi and Ishau are brothers.
According to her, Jibril received N30,000; Saifullahi got N15,000; while Ishau and another suspect, Musa—who is currently at large—shared the remaining amount from the proceeds of the victim’s phone sale.
Items recovered from the suspects include five scissors, two dagger knives, two other knives, a long chain used to restrain victims, and a plier.
Adeh added that the investigation is ongoing, noting that efforts are being intensified to arrest the fleeing suspect and uncover other members of the syndicate.
