Police Arrest 10 Suspected Arsonists In Anambra

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of ten suspects in connection with an alleged case of arson and malicious damage to property in Awka, the state capital, while also refuting claims that the incident was linked to a land dispute involving Agbana Ifite community.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Friday, January 16, by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who described the land-grabbing allegations making the rounds within the community as false, misleading and capable of causing unnecessary tension.

According to the Police spokesperson, the suspects were apprehended strictly in relation to criminal acts bordering on arson and wilful destruction of property, and not on any land ownership or land dispute matter as being speculated by some individuals.

SP Ikenga stressed that the Command views the circulation of unverified narratives around the incident as dangerous, noting that such misinformation could heighten fear, provoke reprisals and undermine public peace.

He further disclosed that investigations into the incident are currently ongoing, adding that the arrested suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of a comprehensive investigation in line with due process.

The Anambra State Police Command, the PPRO said, remains resolute in its mandate to maintain law and order across the state and will not condone any form of criminality, regardless of the guise under which it is perpetrated.

The Command also urged residents of Awka and the wider Anambra public to remain calm, cooperate with law enforcement agencies and refrain from spreading rumours or unverified information capable of destabilising the community.

SP Ikenga further assured Ndi Anambra that the Police will continue to act professionally and transparently in handling criminal matters, while also assuring to keep the public duly informed as investigations progress.
