How Long Should Couples Wait To Have Sex After Childbirth?

After nine months of physical and emotional changes, the last thing on many new mothers’ minds is sex. For most women, childbirth leaves their bodies and routines completely transformed, and intimacy often takes a back seat.

At this point, a man’s role is not only to support the newborn but also to make life easier for his wife. Still, the reality is that men also have needs, which can make the question of when to resume sex after childbirth a sensitive one.

So, How Long Should a Man Wait?

Health experts usually recommend waiting at least six weeks after delivery before resuming vaginal sex. This allows the uterus to shrink back to its normal size, gives time for tears or incisions to heal, and ensures that postpartum bleeding (lochia) has stopped.
But is six weeks a one-size-fits-all answer?

Dr Shakrulla Habeeb, a medical doctor, public speaker and public health advocate, shared a different view in a post on X.

He wrote, “Forget the medically recommended six weeks for a woman to recover postpartum. Real men wait for her to make the first move, because only she knows when her body is ready. It may be less or more than six weeks.”

His point raises an important truth: the woman’s readiness matters most.
While doctors may give guidelines, every woman’s recovery is unique.

Some may feel ready in three weeks, while others may take months before regaining comfort and confidence. The key is open communication, patience, and respect for the woman’s body and emotions.

At the end of the day, the ball is firmly in her court. If she says she’s ready, then she’s ready. If she isn’t, then her partner must respect that. Postpartum sex is less about the calendar and more about the woman’s healing and choice.
