The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed strong confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure a second term in the 2027 general elections, regardless of who becomes the next INEC chairman. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
Speaking in an interview with The Sun, the party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, dismissed claims that APC would influence the appointment of the next electoral umpire as the tenure of the current chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, draws to a close this year.
Basiru boldly stated:
“How can you be asking a player to recommend a referee? We are players and do not care about which referee is brought to officiate the match.”
He further added that the ruling party’s focus is on mobilising and sensitising members to vote for their preferred candidate:
“In fact, by the time we mobilise, even if the new chairman of INEC is the father of the presidential candidate of another party, Asiwaju will still win the election.”
The comment has since stirred heated reactions across political and social media circles, with many questioning the APC’s confidence in winning despite Nigeria’s political tensions ahead of 2027.
