Crisis Deepen As Cross River APC Removes Chairman, Alphonsus Eba

The Cross River State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday removed its chairman, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, after members of the State Executive Committee (SEC) passed an overwhelming vote of no confidence on him amid prolonged internal disputes, Very Nigerian reports.

Eba’s impeachment, endorsed by 30 out of 32 SEC members, followed months of complaints alleging financial mismanagement, high-handed leadership, and the shutdown of the party secretariat for an extended period.

With the chairman’s removal, the SEC immediately mandated the Deputy Chairman, Ntufam Ekum Ekok Ojogu, to assume office as Acting Chairman pending ratification by the APC National Secretariat.

Party leaders said the decision was necessary to halt what they described as a deepening crisis within the state chapter.

Chief Kelvin Njong, Chairman of the APC in Boki and spokesperson for the 18 chapter chairmen, said the impeachment followed extensive consultations and formal petitions sent to the party’s national leadership.

After taking his oath of office, Ojogu pledged to reopen the party structure, reconcile aggrieved members, and restore transparency in administration. He thanked stakeholders for upholding due process and reaffirmed the chapter’s loyalty to Governor Bassey Edet Otu.

“All grievances must be set aside so we can rebuild. All entitlements owed will be addressed. My doors and phone lines are open 24/7. It is time to sheath our swords,” he said.

Ojogu commended ward leaders, polling unit coordinators, and volunteers for sustaining party activities at the grassroots throughout the crisis, promising to work closely with Governor Otu to strengthen the “People First” agenda.

Following the inauguration, SEC members and chapter chairmen proceeded into a closed-door meeting to outline restructuring plans and prepare a formal report to the APC National Secretariat.

The development marks one of the most significant leadership shake-ups in the Cross River APC in recent years, signaling a renewed effort by stakeholders to restore discipline and reposition the party ahead of forthcoming political contests.
