Nigeria’s Crisis: Worst Is Over, Says Gbenga Daniel

Former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, on Sunday, expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, declaring that the worst phase of the country’s challenges is over and that conditions will continue to improve steadily.

Daniel spoke at the 21st edition of his annual family thanksgiving held at the Abraham’s Tabernacle in Sagamu, Ogun State.

Prominent personalities at the church service include, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Femi Pedro; Senator Musliu Obanikoro; former Minister Olorunnimbe Mamora; Mrs Bola Obasanjo, former UK High Commissioner, Sarafa Tunji Isola; Senator Femi Okunrounmu and Ambassador Olatokunbo Awolowo – Dosumu.

Business mogul, Sir Kensington Adebutu (Baba Ijebu), who was Chairman of the Day; former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Tunde Lemo, traditional rulers and religious leaders across the state, were in attendance.

Speaking with newsmen, Daniel said while the country experienced severe economic and security challenges in recent times, there are clear signs that efforts by the Federal Government are beginning to yield results.

“At the beginning, inflation rose sharply, but we are now hearing that it is beginning to calm down,” he said.

The federal lawmaker added that despite the difficulties, Nigerians must remain hopeful and grateful to God.

Daniel commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as creating an enabling environment to move the nation forward.

He expressed confidence that the new year would mark a turning point for the country, saying Nigeria can only get better from this point.

“The worst is over. I believe that gradually and steadily, things will continue to improve,” he stated.

Reacting to criticisms on the credibility of politicians, the former governor admitted that politicians are known to be making false statements, but defended himself, noting that in over 23 years of public service, no one has been able to point to a single false statement attributed to him.

“I became governor in 2003, and this is now 2026. In all these years, if no one has been able to point to a single lie I told, then they should know how to judge me,” he said.

Also speaking, the former governorship candidate of PDP in the state, Ladi Adebutu, implored Nigerians to be hopeful that things would be better.

He said “I have no doubt in my mind that this year will be a good year. We are on the cusp of a critical period, as the timetable for political activities will soon be announced. Whenever we reach moments like this, it is a delicate time for the nation, especially when conditions are still challenging.

“But God is a God of grace and mercy. I believe He will minister to this nation, and in the end, things will turn out for the better. All shall be well. Better days are ahead.”

Delivering sermon during the service, Bishop Francis Wale Oke, National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), emphasised the importance of thanksgiving as a key to unlocking God’s blessings and divine protection.

“If you want God’s attention, praise him,” he said.
