President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.

The nomination, disclosed in a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, follows the resignation of former Defence Minister Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar on Monday.

General Musa, 58, is a highly decorated military officer who served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 to October 2025. He is a recipient of the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering (2012).

Born in Sokoto in 1967, Musa’s military career spans over three decades, from his commissioning as Second Lieutenant in 1991 to commanding major operations including Operation Lafiya Dole, Operation Hadin Kai, and the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Basin.

President Tinubu expressed strong confidence in General Musa’s capacity to strengthen Nigeria’s defence apparatus and lead critical reforms in the security sector.
